Introducing Samburu
Kenya’s wilder north.
Field notes
Three ways to readSamburu.
A concise field guide to the landscape, its daily rhythm and the encounters that define it.

The landscape
The setting itself is a luxury.
In Samburu, there are no grand gestures that promise eulogies for every hour. The best camps sit snugly within the landscape. With every dawn that flows and lights up this part of the world around the river, the wildlife rises, too, and lives newly with every morning’s gentle light. There is always time for a long morning drive. If there is heat, there is a shaded pause when you need one, and you can continue your outing when the temperature falls. Here, slowness is a symphony in which every form of life delights as a joyful independent note. We select camps and routes for their very location, its privacy and relationship to the landscape, and for the fine guiding skills of our partners. We do not plaster ‘luxury’ as a label, we deliver it as an experience every step of the way.

Question, meet answer.
What makes Samburu special?
Its combination of striking semi-arid scenery and northern species. Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and Somali ostrich constitute Samburu’s wildlife character that is distinct from Masai Mara.
Is Samburu good for leopard sightings?
Samburu is recognised as one of Kenya's notable leopard destinations, although sightings can never be guaranteed like anywhere. Its riverine woodland and surrounding dry country provide varied leopard habitat and strong photographic possibilities.
How long should I stay in Samburu?
Three nights is ideal for a focussed visit. It gives you enough time to experience the river and the northern species without making your journey feel rushed.
Is Samburu luxurious?
It can certainly be made exceptionally refined without at all feeling removed from the wilderness. The best properties in Samburu combine beautiful design with strategic locations, thoughtful service and direct access to the landscape. For us, that is always the more meaningful definition of luxury.
